What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a procedure where a chemical agent of a defined strength is applied to the skin to cause a controlled destruction of the different layers of the skin followed by a regeneration and remodeling. This leads to improvement of skin texture and surface abnormalities. There are different types and peels are sometimes classified in terms of the depth of skin they target.
What are 20% TCA peels?
TCA stands for tricholoacetic acid and 20% is its strength. TCA peels are considered “medium peels”, targeting the epidermis and upper layers of the dermis. It has no systemic toxicity, is non-allergenic but is much stronger than alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) used in some other peels.
The outcome from a TCA peel is dose-dependent – the higher the concentration and number of layers applied, the more destructive the effect on the skin.
What are the benefits of 20% TCA peels?
20% TCA peels help reduce the appearance of benign pigmented lesions and hyperpigmentation, along with photodamaged spots (solar lentigines). They also stimulate collagen and elastin production to improve the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin.
How do I prepare my skin for a peel?
It is necessary to prepare the skin for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to treatment. This helps to remove dead skin cells and strengthens the skin, in turn decreasing healing time and improving results. We will assess your current skin care regimen and make recommendations about appropriate products to prepare the skin.
It is also important to minimise sun exposure for 2 weeks prior to treatment and this will reduce the risks of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Your Fitzpatrick Skin Type will also be assessed prior to any treatment to ensure compatibility (Fitzpatrick I-III skin types are suitable for this treatment).
How many peels will I need?
A course of 1 to 3 peels at 4–week intervals is generally recommended for optimal results.
What can I expect after my treatment?
After your treatment, your skin may feel mildly red and inflamed. Your skin may look and feel tight.
Mild swelling around the eyes may occur for a few days, followed by light to moderate peeling of the skin. This will often be associated with an itchy sensation.
What do I use on my skin post-treatment?
Strict adherence to post-peel sun protection and home care instructions is important.
Being gentle with the skin helps to improve comfort. Use a gentle cleanser and dry your skin gently. Avoid scratching or rubbing your face.
To assist, appropriate aftercare products containing a hydrating moisturiser and sunscreen will be demonstrated and recommended.
