How does hair reduction work?

The beams of concentrated light are directed at your hair follicles. The pigment in your hair follicle will absorb the light and heat, damaging the follicle enough to discourage further growth, with the hair eventually falling out. With darker skin types, Nd:YAG laser used as an alternative to attract energy directly to the blood supply of the hair follicle.

Hair reduction treatment can only target and remove hairs that are in a particular phase of the growth cycle. This means that during any one treatment session, certain hairs will be dormant and untreatable. Serial treatments are always recommended to fully remove hair from a particular area of skin.

How do I prepare my skin prior to hair reduction?

On the day of your appointment, please avoid applying moisturiser or other products to the skin.

On the day prior to your appointment, please shave the treatment area.

In the week leading up to your appointment, please avoid active skincare products containing vitamin A or hydroquinone (whitening creams).

In the 2 weeks leading up to your appointment, please avoid exposing the area to direct sunlight and always protects the skin with sunscreen.

In the 4 weeks leading up to your appointment, please do not wax the treatment area as pigment is required in the hair follicle for the laser to identify the hair and treatment to be effective.

What can I expect after my treatment?

Hair reduction treatment is generally well tolerated, with many patients reporting a mild pinching sensation.
